I've been listening to a lot of "yacht rock" or "soft rock" from the 70s in the last year. What do you think? Is this music condemned to your dad's favorite oldies station or does it have some merit? Any more underground bands like this that I should check out?ĭamn, sorry in advance if this runs long. I feel like the laid-back vibe is sort of echoed in some modern bands like Real Estate, and there are bands like Fleet Foxes with similarly poppy harmonies out there but I would kinda like to see a full-on modern soft rock band emerge. I really like the combination of laid-back smooth jazz rhythms with folksy acoustic guitars and lush harmonies. ![]() It led me to get into bands like America and Seals & Crofts that I used to write off as "dad-rock". As funny as it is, I really enjoy the music that they made for the show as well. I recently watched Fred Armisen's show Documentary Now!, which has a hilarious 2-part episode about a fictional soft-rock band called the Blue Jean Committee that parodies bands from that era like the Eagles. ![]() ![]() This is a much-maligned genre/period of music, and I do agree that it's pretty cheesy and self-important, but lately I've found myself really drawn to it. I wanted to see what people in general think of this fairly distinct phase of American rock music.
